SKYLINE HIGH SCHOOL | HEAL, HIGHLAND HOSPITAL
I was born and raised in Oakland, and my family is first-generation immigrants from Hong Kong and China.
Growing up, I didn’t really know what I wanted to do, but I had an opportunity to come to HEAL starting in my eighth-grade year. Now I am planning to go into healthcare.
My favorite part of being in HEAL has been making connections, not just with other students, but also with the staff around the hospital, and seeing what they do. The nurses walk us through their daily routines, tell us how they got their positions. It’s like firsthand experience, and we can picture ourselves in the future doing it.
I also enjoy the sim lab. It has electronic models or robots that they use to simulate real medical emergencies. I participated in delivering a baby and bandaging up some cuts, and also they were really good practice for taking vitals.
People in this field are really making a difference, and helping people get better. I hope I get to be a part of that.
